Fibonacci Retracement & Projection Tool
The levels, and where the scale starts
Enter a high price, a low price and the trend direction below, and the tool returns the Fibonacci levels of that move: the two ends, the retracements between them and one extension past the end.
The scale is read from the end of the move backwards: 0% is where the move finished and 100% is a full retracement back to where it started. In an uptrend that puts 0% at the high and 100% at the low; in a downtrend it is the other way round. Those two rows carry the labels move high and move low in the results.
What each level means
- Fibonacci levels: ratios drawn from the Fibonacci sequence and used as candidate support and resistance, the prices where a move may pause or turn. They are a convention many traders watch, not a forecast.
- Retracement levels: the six points inside the measured move, at 23.6%, 38.2%, 50%, 61.8%, 76.4% and 78.6%. The last two are near twins on purpose: 78.6% is the square root of 61.8% and the one charting packages draw, while 76.4% is the complement of 23.6% and is kept for continuity with older readings.
- Extension level (138.2%): the move carried past a full retracement, so it falls below the low in an uptrend and above the high in a downtrend. Charting packages usually project their extensions on the opposite side, past the high in an uptrend, so check which side this one lands on before comparing it with a chart.
- Trend direction: it decides which end of the move is 0%. An uptrend measures down from the high, looking for supports on a correction; a downtrend measures up from the low, looking for resistance on a rebound.
- Current price: optional. Give it and the results tell you which levels sit above the price and which below, plus how far each one is. Leave it out and the levels are still calculated: the tool just does not claim a direction it cannot know.
